Cinco de Mayo is often mistakenly thought to be Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually celebrated on September 16th. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, with military parades and reenactments. It is not a federal holiday.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a widespread celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican American populations. The day is marked with parades, music, folkloric dancing, and traditional foods. This American celebration of Cinco de Mayo has become more significant than the observance of the holiday in Mexico, reflecting the way in which ethnic communities in the U.S. use historical commemorations to honor and maintain connections to their cultures of origin.
